Have recently aquired a dell inspiron 1525. Problem is when disconnected from mains to run on battery the screen dimms to almost unreadable. the battery is good and charges properly.Help?

But Vista and 7 have a control panel with an adjustment for brightness while on battery power. You didn't reveal if you pushed it up there.

And no, it may not go as bright as on AC. This is BURNED INTO THE DESIGN!

The OS is vista, have looked through control panel and found battery brightness, It was already on max, so I have no other options or, is this normal, anyone else find brightness a problem?

It's a discussed issue on the Dell forums. I don't feel we need to repeat it but there is something burned into the design to drop the brightness when on battery. It was forced by the maker since users were complaining about battery run times.

So they fixed it.

What you have to do is pres the "Fn+ArrowUp" on the keybord and that will put the brightness up. This mode is in order for the laptop to save battery life. You can adjust this brightness when the power is plugged-in or out and it should save it.
