Wifi suddenly stopped..

Wifi connection was working fine on my Gateway M-Series laptop (Vista).
Then the connection would go on & off.
Its got a switch on the side to turn on & off wifi, but now even that's not working. The wifi indication light won't come on now.
I tried rebooting, nothing. Tried the F2 (wifi) button, nothing.
Is the LAN/WAP the problem?
My friend's laptop is working fine. (in same room & also using same wifi connection)
I went to the "Connect To" screen & it's not showing any wifi signals at all now.

What happened??

I am left to guess. But I do carry a small USB WiFi to test when this happens. Older laptops (2 years is now old!) do have failing wifi cards and given the repair costs I always give the option of some small USB wifi replacement.
