Since post is done in some other video mode, it's likely the machine needs repairs.

I suspected a mode change also. I awoke this morning with the thought that I need to flash the bios, if only to eliminate it as a possibility. I did so, and now the Post screen is mostly bright, but the bottom two lines are dimmer.

I then loaded Puppy Linux from a stick, and the screen seems to be about 85% of where I think the brightness should be. I'm not getting the netbook's built-in brightness keys to work in this mode, so maybe they're Windows driven? Not sure how all this fits together. I'm going to go ahead and build the machine and see how it turns out.

On the Aspire One I have

Brightness is controlled/set by a HELPER APPLICATION. The office has over 20 makes of laptops and frankly I wish Microsoft has consolidated this into the OS.
