Find the CMOS battery and check it with your Volt meter. Replace if low or dead.

I would think that this would only effect the time date. but I did check the battery and it was dead. Now I have one on order from ebay but have to wait till it gets here from china. It was a ML1220 that has to be sodderd onto the board. thanks for the info and crossing my fingers that it works.

Much more. Having had machines that don't do anything with that part low or dead, I always check. Even if it's a long shot, the payoff is worth a measure with the Volt meter.

MY LAPTOP is doing the same thing. I debating to fix it by getting a new HD or send it in to toshiba but THE warranty is up and I don't want to fork over 3k WHAT I DO?

I didn't read where you measured that battery or much else.

Not everyone is ready to be a laptop repair person. For example, most don't own a Volt meter or any tools.

I really appreciate your post. My HP laptop was out of warranty. Before having someone diagnose what the issue was I tried the generic reset and IT WORKED. I would appreciate further information on what the generic reset is, and how it works without power.

Most PCs have a small battery connected to the motherboard to keep a few circuits alive with date, time and maybe some BIOS settings.

The reset I noted was put in just in case these chips get a little confused and don't start up the PC. Also, the actual button hold time is usually 10 to 30 seconds but I found folk that would not get it done so years ago I changed it to 60 seconds to ensure that folk held it long enough. The advice worked better so I've stuck with 60 seconds even if the actual number can be less.

I'm going to keep this simple and stop here.
