How to extract files from Hard disk?? - Motherboard failed

I have a compaq presario v3000 laptop which is about 4 years old. It is an AMD processor laptop. The laptop over heated & has caused the motherboard to fail. I have lots of files/photos on the harddrive that I would like to retrieve however I do not want to pay ridiculous prices for an IT shop to retrieve them or pay for another motherboard.

I do not want to remove the hard disk from the laptop, because its a risky plan..
The blue light of the power button is on, so i think that my laptop is running internally???

If anyone knows how to get the data or how to turn the internal harddrive into an external USB harddrive.. please help me or else i have to pay a huge money to get the data back.

Typically you would remove the HDD from the L/T and use an enclosure to do data transfer, that is generally what a shop would do. It is not generally conisdered a major job, however the HDD will have to be removed if the system is non functional.

Yeah, my motherboard cracked would not continue startup, also. You mentioned an enclosure to do a data transfer.
This may sound like a dumb question, but what is an enclosure? I've got a lot of personal files to be transfered and any help would be greatly appreciated.

A hard drive enclosure is a small cabinet that you would put your hard disk drive from your laptop into to transfer your files to another computer. This little box would have a usb cable on it that you can plug into another computer so you can access it as an external hard drive. an example of one is here:

You will need to know what interface (type of plug) is on your drive, whether it is an IDE or SATA drive to get the correct one, post your service tag on here & I'll let you know if you don't know this.

The one linked to at eBay is for a 3.5" disk. All laptop disks I know are 2.5". Then you need a smaller enclosure. Better check before you buy.
