I guess they don't remember the battery fire days and what happened next. I hope there is no override because that would mean the safeguards can be bypassed.

Again, complain to the battery seller or just get the Dell battery. Some report success with BIOS updates, but BIOS does not wear out. Makes you wonder.

I've done some research and consulted with a few buddies that are very well versed in fixing/troubleshooting computers (laptops especially). All contended that I should be able to use it since they had done the same thing with their other laptops (that were not DELL). Then I found this website

Typical B.S. corporate strategy a la Microsoft. Figures. Needless to say, I'll never purchase another DELL product.

From memory the same lock is in over half the products. Those battery fires and folk litigating caused this.

It's a long discussion about this but what maker would you choose now?

Probably ASUS. I've read a lot of good things about their machines and a few friends have their products (laptops and tablets) and really like them.

I would agree that the lawsuits/other issues had an influence over their policy, however that doesn't mean that they (DELL) have to charge such a large amount for their batteries. It's very much akin to car dealerships these days who make most of their profits in their service departments (repair) rather than on the actual sale of the item. I feel like a lot of people would be willing to purchase something at a slightly higher price as long as it was going to last.

And the battery prices we pay are not out of line. It appears there are cheap no name models that don't work out for folk so why would anyone use that as a basis for a price?

Your comment about the going to last is interesting. I have written many times about 300 cycle batteries (that's 18 months for folk that use a battery daily) and how laptops look to be 3 or 4 year affairs.

Consumers are not willing to pay for a 10 year laptop.
