Virus/Malware and battery connection

My wife uses Compaq laptop and a fairly new (two months old)
Toshiba webbook. Recently the battery went bad on the webbook. Almost simultaneously she was unable to access her Gmail on internet explorer. The battery has been replaced, but I she still cannot access her email unless I run IE in the "no add-ons" mode. However, if I turn off all of the add-ons manually, she cannot access email. She can access Gmail in FireFox. The only other change is that we recently installed Trend antivirus software on this device.

Within a day of so of the trouble with her webbook, her work computer (Compaq)started running very slow. Then the battery went out on that computer! Her office IT has cleaned the computer, but the slowness has come back and is not responding to any scans. I don't believe in coincidence, but I have never heard of a virus killing a laptop battery. Any ideas and/or solutions? Have tried Malware Bytes in safe mode on both computers and it has not remedied the situation....
