I have my Gateway for two years and I already use the THIRD !! power cable. And it would have been the 5th one if I wouldn't have tried to repair the cable 2 times. The original lasted one year but the replacement cable lasted 3 month only. I am pretty sure now that it is the cables and NOT the laptop. I know this because I cut off the faulty part of the cable (the part where I had to twist and turn to make it work) and re-united it again by connecting the two little wires inside the cable and closed it with black tape. Worked like a charm for another 2 month. Then I bought new cable...worked for 3 month....then I had to bend it around the screen to make it load and I had to repair it again. There must be something wrong with the quality of the cables. A good idea is to shut down the laptop over night and whenever it is not in use for some hours....and plug out the power cable to prevent overheating of the cable. The heat might weaken the cable and make it susceptible to tears I guess.
By the way the "injuries" of the cables where on different places every time, but ALWAYS on the part which goes to the laptop not the part that goes into the wall outlet. It also helps if you get a cable with an "L" shaped plug that goes into the laptop. It prevents pulling force. Hope this helps! If you want to know exactly how to repair the cable let me know!
