sony vio dvd-ram is driving me nuts

I'm trying to continue using a CD-RW that already has stuff burned by this drive, now it won't recognize it, it thinks it's a dvd-r and keeps wanting to "prepare this disk"? Now I can't even access what's on the disk, it just wants to "prepare this disk?" It's a RW disk, and I don't get the option to "erase this disk", thing is, it tells me theres 200MB left, so it knows theres a disk with data, but it thinks it's a "blank disk" still, and it wont burn, until it "prepares this disk", which if I let it do it says "windows cant complete format". Help.

Of an old drive or software troubles. I'll uninstall and reinstall the software title that you use to give Windows XP this capability then I'll swap the drive out for a new drive.

I never bother with any other step except to clean the lens. There are many stories about this trouble but one other lesson is to learn to live without CDRW as a drive and just use simple, simple sessions.
