Laptop Display is stuck in low resolution

Hi, I have an HP Pavilion DV6500 custom made laptop with an nVidia Geforce 8400M graphics card. It came with Windows Vista on it but I reverted it to XP Pro and got all the drivers for it. Just recently my computer started freaking out and jumping to low resolution (640x480) and stayed in it. So I decided to put vista back on it to fix the problem. This was a temporary fix as after I started installing all my items the computer crashed again and got stuck in low resolution. The big problem I am having is that I can't adjust the resolution at all. I change it back to the monitors default (1280x800) but it stays low. Even if I install a new OS is stays in that low resolution for the whole installation. The device manager flags the video card with a code 43 and I do not know what that means. I have tried reinstalling the drivers but that does nothing. If anyone has an answer that would be great because HP wants about 4 times what the video card is worth to repair it.
