Laptop troubleshooting forum: Laptop Power Porblem and it won't turn on

Just like desktops we have to decide to try boards or not. The cost of a properly equipped shop to fix these laptops is going to run you about 120 just to answer if it's one part, the other or both. For HOME REPAIR your best plan is to think it's all the parts you suspect and then ask yourself is the laptop worth fixing since we can find nice refurbs and netbooks(new) for that much money.

Just so we're clear. You can't determine which part it is given the details so far and it is doubtful more details will help. I offer the above to help you make this a simple decision process.

-> Frankly? I would not fix this by ordering the boards. I let the shop do it since they have to stand by the estimate and if there is another part that failed then they usually eat it.

Full disclosure. I have designed electronic gear for years and have the usual oscope and more. I also owned a small computer repair shop for many years. After too many years of 16 hour days I sold it.

Could you please keep us posted on your progress? I too have a Gateway 450 and am having the same problem you are experiencing with it not turning on and the humming noise comming from the charging board. I know it's the noise is comming from the charging board because it only occurs when it's connected to the motherboard.

I just started having this issue today. I decided to give my laptop a spring cleaning because it's been running really hot lately - thought the heatsink was dusty. I cleaned it out, put it back together and now it won't turn on. Hopefully the new board works for you then I'll know if it's worth trying or not.

Ok MIke, is your battery fully dead or can you have acces to another 450rog to get it charged. I had a dead battery in there when i did all of this, well the night i ordered my new one it died(how ironic) Well the new one was on back order and finally came today, i just through it in since it had a charge and hit the power button, it turned on, then i through on the charger (the moment of truth) and there was no more buzzing, the laptop reconized the battery and was on it's way and as i write you i just noticed my light turned green meaning the battery is charged, succes? let's hope so, hopw this helps you thoe.
