Dell Inspiron 15R SE vs Dell XPS L521x

by Lukretius - 7/17/12 3:28 PM

Hey everyone,

I have decided to finally get a new laptop for myself and am torn between the following two Laptops:

Dell Inspiron 15 R SE with the following specs:

-->Intel Core i7-3612QM Ivy Bridge-Prozessor 4x 2.10 GHz
--> Turbo-Boost up to 3.10 GHz, 8 Hyper-Threads, 6 MB L3-Cache, HD Graphics 4000
-->8192 MB DDR3-1600 MHz Dual-Channel SDRAM (2x 4096 MB)
--> ATI Radeon HD 7730M, DirectX 11.1 GPU with 2048 MB DDR3
-->15.6" WLED 1920x1080 16:9 FullHD Antiglare TFT display
--> 1000 GB HD with 5400

Dell XPS 15 L521x with the following specs:

--> Intel Core i7-3612QM Ivy Bridge-Prozessor 4x 2.10 GHz
-->Turbo-Boost up to 3.10 GHz, 8 Hyper-Threads, 6 MB L3-Cache, HD Graphics 4000
--> 8192 MB DDR3-1600 MHz Dual-Channel SDRAM (2x 4096 MB)
--> Nvidia GT 640M,DirectX 11.1 GPU with 2048 MB GDDR5
-->15.6" WLED 1920x1080 16:9 FullHD TFT
--> 750 GB HDD 7200 + 32 GB mSATA SSD-Bootdrive

Basically I am starting my PhD this October and need a new Laptop that will last me for the next 4 years. It will mostly be used for studying/research purposes, so web browising/MS office etc but I will also use it as a desktop replacement so it should also have a good performace in terms of multimedia use. I will move the laptop around quite a bit around the university and also when I go abroad for research purposes so a compact design and mobility is important. I only play games now and then but I hope that at least for the next one or two years I will still be able to play new games with reasonably high video settings, although as I said that is not a priority.

I am quite set on Dell as I have used a Dell Studio for the last 4 years and it was the first laptop I was really happy with both in terms of its performance and its built and overall quality. As I said I hope that my laptop will last me for a good 4 years. In the beginning I was quite set on the Inspiron because it seems to have quite good specs for its price and I also quite like the 1080p anti glare display and the design. But once i heard of the new XPS 15 I reconsidered my earlier decision and now I am torn between the two laptops. The XPS 15 seems to have the better design and built quality and also seems to be more compact and mobile.

I know that you cant compare two laptops that differ so much in price but for me the important question rather is whether it is worth spending so much more money to get the XPS 15 when the basic specs seem to be relatively similar, apart from the GPU and the SSD boot drive of the XPS. To me the XPS seems to be the more complete and better tuned laptop, but I am not an expert when it comes to laptops so I might overlook things. Also, if there really is an alternative laptop that you think I must consider I'd be open to that, although as I said I have a clear preference for Dell.
