Forgot to give the price for the two laptops and somehow cant edit my original post. The Inspiron comes at 800 euros(1000$) and the XPS at 1500 euros(1800$). I originally only planned to spend 800 euros max on my laptop but when the XPS came out I reconsidered, especially as I want to use the laptop for 4 years minimum.

I see GAMER CLASS machines here so I'm going to write these are 2 year machines. You may want to reconsider your goals. If you had opted for more pedestrian on board graphics then that would move you out of the GAMER category and extend the expected lifespan.

And let's define lifespan for most. Lifespan is the time till it needs repairs. Even with a small or major failure the life of the laptop is not over unless the owner considers repairs to be end of life.

Why dont they last four years now anymore. As I said my Dell Studio lasted for a good four years. Surely I dont expect to play any up to date games on it by now anymore, but gaming is not my priority anyways. Apart from that the Dell Studio still works alright, although you feel its age from time to time but only for the last couple of months. Thats what I would expect from my new laptop too.

300 cycles. That's about 18 months if you use it.

And then you have the keyboard on the these. The Inspiron is a fine value but I've seen students and gamers need a replacement in about year 3.

Then you opted for a GAMER laptop. It does not matter you don't play games often. It's the fact it's in there and most owners will not recognize what canned air is for.

It appears I offended you with my warnings. If so, I apologize but not for an industry delivering less and less life span products. The only good news is "low prices."

Machines such as the i7 but entry level GPUs like the Nvidia 525m or lower or integrated graphics we are looking at the usual boring longer life span laptops. Those high end GPUs don't seem to help the life span. But for those buyers, that's not the goal.
