Shopping for laptop for new college student. Computer will also be shared at home by family for student projects, reports, web browsing, internet gaming etc.
LOTS to choose from & it's getting confusing! Student will use for reports, presentations, graphics, anything a college freshman can expect. Needs to be light weight, sturdy & dependable.
Best Buy has a Toshiba - 15.6" Satellite Laptop - 4GB Memory - 320GB Hard Drive. Model: (C655D-S5511) at $309. Is this enough memory and speed?
I don't mind spending a bit more for better long term value.Do I need to spend more for more memory & a faster processor? Should I consider refurbished? What features should I look for? Any brand of processor better than another? Any brands to avoid? ANY HELPFUL ADVICE IS WELCOMED! thanks so much all for your help...

At 309, it's not a big investment (sorry if this offends anyone) and in 2 years you can see how it ages and plan for a replacement.

Thanks Bob. Like I said I don't mind spending a little more upfront if necessary. Do you think 4GB Memory & 320GB Hard Drive is enough or for twice the price up to 8GB memory and twice the hard drive?? I want to make sure I make the right choice first and skip the regrets and returns later... thanks again.

And in fact, if you get past the idea this is something I'd plan to replace in 2 years with another 300 dollar laptop, it's far better than a 600 dollar laptop that you have to replace in year 3.
Why do I write such a damning sentence? It's pretty simple as I've seen too many failures for college students in years 2 and 3 so let's plan ahead and not have it be a disaster.
