Laptop buying advice forum: For these needs, <$1000 possible?

a system with solely SSD. Most people get SSD's for boot drives where they don't have to write much. The advantage for SSD's is the speed they read. So if the Sony has 2 drive bay you can purchase it with a HD and buy a SSD separately say a 120 gb or 240 gb. I just bought a 240 gb for 225. It would be nice if you got a kit and your could clone the System HD to the SSD.

I did that with my laptop. I ordered an Acer 8950G with a 750 gb HD. The then purchased a Kingston 120 GB SSD with a kit. The kit includes a case with a USB connector and Acronis cloning software. I recently upgraded to a OCZ Agility 240 GB and used the same kit to clone that drive.

I will probably use the older SSD to install and test Windows 8 once it comes out.

Any site suggestions for an F series refurb? I would presume Newegg and Amazon are good starting points?

I've picked up refurbs over the years from newegg, geeks.com and the IBM or Lenovo sites.

I have no specific suggestions because these are pretty dynamic. I've noted some before and folk complain when it's gone.

But from what I've read and experienced, they are very much superior especially with the long-term slowdown of standard HDs.

Good tradeoff of dollars to speed.

I've become so accustomed to standard hard drives, maybe a faster one would still work fine for me. SSD is clearly superior but as you mentioned, there is a price to be paid.

I guess since I am still using a well-loved PC from almost 10 years ago (yet still I've managed to keep up consistently tech wise) going with another spinner isn't that much of a trade off to save $400. In it's absence, may divert additional funds to 6 or 8GB of RAM.

That we just max it out today. SSD is not so cheap and I don't feel like downsizing today.
