Resolved question

Toshiba vs. HP vs. Sony

by FalconRN - 8/3/11 12:23 AM

So my HP dv9000 just bit the dust for the 3rd time in 4 years and after finding (albeit a little late) the Class Action Suit against nVidia that could have at least gotten me something for the doorstop that it now is; I am back looking for a new 17" laptop.
Been looking at the:

Toshiba Satellite P770-BT4G22 = $1259
Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM processor 2.0GHz (2.90 GHz with Turbo Boost Technology), 6MB Cache
8GB DDR3 1333MHz SDRAM (4096MBx2)
640GB HDD (5400rpm, Serial-ATA)
1600x900 Screen
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 540M with NVIDIA® Optimus™ Technology with 1GB GDDR3 memory
Lithium Ion Battery (12-cell)

vs.

Sony VPCF2290X = $1400
Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM quad-core processor (2.0GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 2.90GHz
16.4" 2D Full HD LCD display (1920x1080) with LED backlight
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 540M (1GB VRAM)
Blu-ray Disc™ player
640GB (7200rpm) hard drive
8GB (4GBx2) DDR3-SDRAM-1333
Large lithium-ion battery (7500mAh)
Adobe Software Pack

vs.

HP dv7tQuad Edition = $1332
2nd generation Intel(R) Quad Core(TM) i7-2630QM (2.0 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) w/Turbo Boost up to 2.9 GHz
1GB GDDR5 Radeon(TM) HD 6770M Graphics [HDMI, VGA]
8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
640GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
9-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery
17.3" diagonal Full HD HP Anti-glare LED Display (1920 x 1080)
Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner

I mean the HP and Sony could be upgraded more but based on what the numbers work out to be across the board are pretty equal. Basically should I consider upgrading the processor for $300? or to 12GB of RAM for $300? And which would be the better use of my top budget of $1700, the RAM or the CPU?

Lastly, I'm a little leary to cozy up to HP again with the way my last PC fared. But then again it seems to be more of an nVidia problem and that would be the Video Card on the Toshiba and Sony - so I'm in a bit of a pickle.

I mean compared to my 2007 DuoCore2.2GHz and 2GB RAM all of these are going to be much faster. I do some photo editing and some light CAD work and light Gaming but mostly Presentations and Documents.

Thanks for your thoughts,
Rob
