Dell Extended Warranty pricing inconsistent: BUYER BE WARE

I received as a gift a Dell Studio laptop purchased at an authorized Dell Retailer. When I attempted to purchase an extended warranty for the machine, I was made aware, by Dell Warranty and System Sales, that Dell has different warranty coverages and costs based on where the product was purchased. It can be the EXACT same machine down to the color and Dell has different warrantees based on where you purchased it.
I have received indirect quotes (indirect because Dell won't give a quote until you buy) of between $500 - $600 for a 3 year premium warranty with inhome service after remote technical diagnosis. You don't find out that the total cost of ownership for the machine skyrockets until after you by it. I hope your retailer as a good return policy.
This is for a machine purchased at Bestbuy, Staples or Costco. This information is from direct quotes from phone conversations with Dell represetatives at Dell's sales phone number.
A warranty for this exact same machine, configured and purchased on Dell.com would sell for $390..
And Dell's quality has reached such lows that an extended warranty is necessary. But depending upon where you but the machine, the warranty can cost well over half the price of the machine.
