I have bought a SATA HDD but

I am clueless as to how to set it up to be a slave - the markings are different on the bottom; left to right are to dots for 3 and the right one has a dot over a square. Both are 500 GB HDD and I had it in the computer and they were at one time both active. Computer is a Compaq, Model #: CQ5826, Product #: QX350AA#ABA, and it has Windows 7 Home Premium. I had hoped to use it as a backup for the main 500 GB HDD. Originally, I had it installed w/o a pin connector in it, later put a pin connector on the last one. I had used HP Recovery (D:), deleted that and put D: Recovery on the new drive. It did back up everything but it was an .iso image. I had to delete both with www.killdisk.com. Darrell

As noted, SATA doesn't have such. But boot order is usually set by the BIOS and I usually fill the SATA ports from the lowest number to the top number.

SATA has no master/slave

Master/slave was something we had to worry about with IDE (aka PATA) drives, but with SATA every device has its own power and data cables. This means that every SATA drive is a master, hard drives, DVD/CD drives, whatever.

Looked at the links and hit a minor problem, Kees

Took Bob's advice and tried to figure out what ports there were on the mobo. I had 0, 1, 3 but two was located at up/down position near 0 and 1. 0 was the DVD-RW, Main was 1, had the other HD on 3. Reconfigured in the setup and now 0 is Primary HDD, 1 is the secondary HDD and 2 is now DVD-RW.
The only thing I am not certain of is what program will Backup C: to D:? I don't think the backup for windows works well and I removed D: HP Recovery and made all the other letters setup in line, C, D, E, F, G - E&F are DVD-RWs, one internal and one external; G is the card reader. Darrell

So you need a backup program to backup what? Images or files? Full backup or incremental?

Personally I use Acronis for a full backup , xcopy and xxcopy for an incremental backup, and occasionally Windows Explorer for files that aren't in my regular scheme.

But it could be you prefer Microsofts free Synctoy, or Syncback or Easeus backup, recommended by our member wpgwpg. It's fully your own choice.

Generally, however, we can't recommend programs that store files in a proprietary format (but Acronis is an exception for me).
