Internet Explorer problem

I use Windows 7 64 bit OS. When I attempt receive emails. I al Internet connection is fine, as I can send and open Internet Explore, I simply get an error message, that this page cannot be displayed. My actual internet connection is fine can get online with Mozilla Firefox, but I prefer IE. I even attempted to download and install IE10 hoping that would solve my problem. But since I cannot even open IE, I do not know which version is installed. I did try to reinstall IE9, but receive a message saying that version is already installed, so that may actually be the version on the computer. Can anyone tell me what I can do to get IE functioning again?
