Windows 7 updates failing to install?

I have gone at least 5 months since I last installed windows updates. I had partially disabled the automatic updates (made it so that it downloads automatically but I choose whether to install them) and have recently decided to install the 101 or so updates that had been downloaded automatically.


About 74 of those updates, but I was able to troubleshoot windows update and so was able to successfully install 30 of those important updates.

The problem now is that I have 44 updates that are downloaded and require a shutdown or restart to be installed. However every time I shutdown or restart my computer I have to wait 5-10 mins for windows to configure the updates and in the end they fail and the changes are reverted.

I've tried troubleshooting again but it did not work. I wonder if these updates are older versions of newer ones I have installed and are therefore failing to install.

How can I fix this problem?

But without an KBnnnnnnn or KBnnnnnn to work with it's anyone's guess what it is.

The .NET install failures are legendary so we should no longer have to repeat that issue and its cures. What is failing? Find those KB numbers.

Did you make sure you clicked on the image to see its full size? The KB numbers would be readable then.

Primarily, we find the manual download of each of the Knowlegebase Articles, then install each one manually, one at a time. (Yep, I know there are 44 of them, but it should get it done.. Unfortunately, disabling the updates till there are 101 isn't always the recommended way of proceeding.. Here, we disable Automatic Updates entirely, but a extremely vigilant to visit the Windows Update site on the second Tuesday of each month, which is when the updates are released.) It's fairly easy to manually download the individual update by simply typing in the KBnumber into Google. For example, typing "KB2585542" into Google will take you to the download site for the update. Download the file and run it.

In addition, it's also possible to try visiting the Windows Update site manually Open Internet Explorer, click on "Tools-Windows Update", and allow the site to scan for missing updates, then install them.. Sometimes it fixes the issue as well.
