Hi
My windows home server has decided to stop communicating with the client machines.
The connector software won't connect (reinstalling makes no difference), remote desktop times out, manually shutting down (by pressing the power button) and restarting also fails to correct the problem.
I can ping the server (average response time 3m\s)
The Home Server machine is headless and although there is a connector the only monitor I have doesn't fit the connector.
I susoect that the internal battery may have gone flat and may be the servers clock is out of sync with the client machine (but even when the server is asleep its still connected to the mains).
Someone has said that I can connect a laptop to the sever via an ethernet cable but the only instructions I can find say that I have to set the IP address on both machines to be the same - Is this correct or is there another way of connecting?

But here I usually don't connect directly like that since there may be no DHCP server.
There is no way to connect video to most laptops since most don't have a video input.
Let's hear something about this server, make, model and what it's support says to do.

Even the support documents don't work properly. Hopefully you kept backup copies and if not have tried the tips we have at the top of the CNET Storage forum.
There is no video output on this but there is a section in the many on how to replace the system HDD. However the link to restore the OS is M.I.A. I barely remember this server and you can guess my take on this one.
