If I understand you correctly, there's no solution to this issue. Is that right?

I've been trying for over a month to fine-tune Clear Type, but whatever I do it doesn't look good.

I'm not sure I got what you meant by "a software solution". Could you elaborate please?

It is a solution to improve what happens when you just pop fonts on screen without using a fixed font that lands perfectly on the LCD matrix.

Today you see Apple offering "Retina Displays" that solve this issue by adding a lot more pixels to the display.

As this could go on for hours in a presentation or class, I have to stop here. We are covering technology, limits of displays and workarounds. The only cure without clear type is to get more pixels per inch.

I see below there are FONT issues.

Those issues are, well, legendary. FONT SUBSTITUTION in windows is a tricky thing. I see you changed those entries so my thought is the substituted font is more to your liking.

As you read the above links, ClearType was not turned on in XP and if you do research into the default and substituted fonts in Windows 3, 95, 98, XP, Vista, 7 and now 8 you learn one thing. -> It's inconsistent. <-

You can't move from version to version and expect the same display. Also, if you don't have a printer driver installed and a default printer selected, more troubles. I'll leave you to ponder why that is.

I've read the articles in Wikipedia, and it's quite complicated for a layman.
Did you mean changing the DPI from the Control Panel? I've raised it to 108% and it didn't help.

No. We can't change DPI on a LCD.

The dots per inch on a LCD are fixed. The only way to change them is to change the LCD. This is why we must select the windows resolution to be what the LCD offers. It's also why ClearType was created. To cheat a little and use subpixel rendering.

You asked a good question but the answer is going to take a lot of explaining.
