E-mails are multiplying!

Windows 7. All of a sudden all the old e-mails in my inbox are multiplying by something like 7 times. I now have over 50,000 e-mails in my inbox.

Anyone know how this happened and how to stop it?

- What e-mail program do you use? Windows 7 doesn't come with one, so you must have installed it yourself.
- What server (the part of the e-mail address after the @)?
- What protocol to communicate with the server (pop3, imap, exchange, ...)?
- If pop3, what's the setting of 'Leave messages on server' in the account properties? If set, why?

I use Windows Live Mail

The server is @optonline.net (cablevision/optimum). I spoke to a rep. and he said it is a Windows issue.

With respect to your other questions, I don't know. But I would think this is something Cablevision could help me with, despite what the rep. said.

And I still get single e-mails on the optium.net. It's just windows live mail that's screwed up.

Email problem

This sounds like a bot infection, what are you running for A/V security? Is you A/V security software capable or set up to do an Email scan? This doesn't sound like a Windows issue but rather something having gotten through, possibly a bogus attachment linked to an email that started the ball rolling.

If a bot, MSE insufficient to the task. Try this, download Malwarebytes, save to system. Boot into SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING, run Malwarebytes in this mode to see if it picks up any bugs. At the end of the scan (MWB) anything shown in the list, highlighted in red, is a potential threat..click SHOW RESULTS and go to REMOVE...this is something that many use as a first shot technique for bug removal it is free and is quite effective. When done, boot back to windows and check the system.
