Another crazy mouse problem

I have seen other cursor problems on various forums, but nothing like this.
I have an Acer AO722 notebook computer. The problem that I am having is that the touchpad repeatedly clicks the left button by itself. If I rest the cursor over the start button, the menu continually appears/disappears. The same happens when rested over the little arrow in the tray area. Moving the cursor activates any icons it may pass over. I can disable the mouse via the keypad with the fn+F7 keys and can use an external mouse without problem. If I re-enable the touch with the external mouse connected, the touch will not do its thing until the pad is touched. So once I put my finger on it, it starts it repeating clicks. If I reboot into safe mode, the problem is still there.
Any questions for clarification are welcome.
I would like to solve this because I do not always have a smooth surface on which to use a mouse.
