MBR deleted =0

I went to install windows 8 on my cousins computer but right after I had deleted the partitions to make room for the new OS he realized he had files that he needed so now he is wanting me to just forget windows 8 and recover what he had but I believe the MBR has been deleted and now I don't know what to do to recover his windows 7.

If you deleted partitions, and then saved those changes, then you're going to need recovery software to get anything off the drive. If you subsequently tried installing Windows 8 after deleting the partitions, odds are most of the data is gone, and nothing short of expensive recovery services will get it back. Typically when people see the price tag for recovery services, they decide the data wasn't THAT important.

Remove that drive from use now.

It sounds like you deleted the partition and installed 8. This means that a lot of the disk area was overwritten. Folk often think that this is recoverable but it isn't. The only hope is for the pros like drivesavers.com to let them try to get pictures or documents off areas that were not overwritten. This is not trivial and not a job for the usual software titles.

If you want your files to stick around, don't have them on any drive you have connected while installing an OS. Period.

Yes, you will have folk write they have done this but high wire acts are done without a net too. And that can end in disaster.

Before making any significant change to a system, you should always do a full system backup using good 3rd party software like Norton Ghost, Easeus Todo Backup, Memeo, etc. I'm sorry but I hope you and your friend are wiser about this in the future.
