Computer programs freeze

I'm having a problem on my computer where freezing happens not buffering. I have windows 7, 64 bit, it's about one year old with a good graphics card, eight GB's of memory and a solid state hard drive. Intel (R) Core (TM) i7-2600 CPU 3.40 GHz.
When trying to watch a movie a clip or a game it will play but I need to move the mouse or click it. Flash games are almost unplayable on Firefox and IE. On demanding games that I have bought there is never a problem. I'm told at the web sites to update Adobe flash player and Shockwave which I have, but that didn't do anything.
Techs that I have talked to say go to restore point but it doesn't go back anywhere close to the date when the problem started. Or reinstall windows but that seems to be their answer for everything.
I'd be very grateful for any guidance.
