wonder if you tried "system restore" yet. Do that first. You might also add what applications are missing and if they are still found in Start/All Programs, etc. If so, you can recover the links that way.

Thanks for your advice. The clue to the problem /solution was contained in my original query. I encountered the 'Application not found' problem with my desktop shortcuts after I deleted Firefox as a browser. As soon as I reinstalled it, the problem was solved. Apparently Firefox got its hooks into my shortcuts and invalidated those shortcuts under IE alone. Those shortcuts were created by IE, but now will only work if I have Firefox installed - even if IE is my default browser. Can anyone explain why this situation exists?

Such a shortcut is simply a url. You define what program to use to open it in Control Panel>Default programs.

If it's defined to use Firefox and that program isn't present anymore, you'll get that message. The cure is quite simple: tell Windows 7 what (other) browser to use. Use the second option (filetypes or protocols), page down to protocols and choose your favorite browser for ftp, http and https. Should work.
