Windows 7 forum: create an association

The file extention...letters after the period...determines what program will open it. You really should only need that for viewing purposes.

I am new to win7 and was on Xp before and never had any trouble in down;loading and sending photo's by e-mail.
please explain.

From the email you're composing, send the image file as an attachment. This is usually represented by a paper clip icon somewhere. You navigate to where the image resides and select it. You don't try to open it such as with a double-click as that may be what is causing your problem. If you try to open or double-click it will look for a program associated with it. If none is found, Windows asks you for a program. Just find the paper clip icon, navigate to the picture file when prompted and select it.

I assume the attachment method works. Steven did explain it quite nicely.

Your story, however, is far from complete.
If you want some explanation of why what you did in XP didn't work in Windows 7, please tell:
- how did you copy the picture from the camera to the PC in Windows XP
- how did you copy the picture from the camera to the PC in Windows 7
- how did you send the picture in Windows XP and with what email program
- how did you try to send the picture in Windows 7 and what email program are you using
- when were you told to create an association with the file (what did you do to trigger that message)

Hi,
I plugged in my camera and clicked on download files from camera.

Exactly as above.

I clicked on the paper clip then onto the file ,then on send.

I tried to send them as usual (win xp method) whilst I was in hot mail.com.

I was told ,when I clicked on send, which triggered the message.

If I interpret "I clicked on the paper clip" that means:
1. I went into my browser
2. I logged in into hotmail.com ("hotmail' is one word, not two as you write: "hot mail")
3. I chose to make a new message
4. I filled the to-address, the subject line and typed something in the body of the mail
5. I clicked on the paper clip
But your leaving out steps 1 to 4 makes me wonder if I guessed right.

That's exactly the way Steven described. So if you did the same in Windows 7 and you tell that it doesn't work, that means that his (and mine) advice doesn't work? But you don't that either. In fact, you write nothing about our solution.

Fair enough , you tried to help me ,but I do not need Grammar or spelling lessons from you, all I wanted was some help, not sarcasm, and what are you confused about Kees ?

In my first reply, I asked for the file extension of the picture files. Since you didn't give that information, I'll ask again and maybe we can determine what program will open that file type and you can make that association. It would make sense that you'd want to view your own picture files and associating by file type is a good way to simplify the process. Once an association is made, maybe you can try to resend the file to see if that corrects your issue. I don't use hotmail, however, so can't envision exactly what you are seeing. I use Thunderbird and gmail and both of those will send attachments in the way I mentioned. I've never tried to send a file that I couldn't view myself so I've not faced your exact scenario but it really should work without a program association on the local PC. Something is amiss. I did run into an incident where a person had a mouse setting problem that was sending the "open" command with a single click instead of double click. It should require two clicks to open an image file. One to select and the other to open it. I suppose it's possible that your mouse opens programs or file with a single click rather than a double click. That's about all I can think of. Let us know what the file extension is, we can determine what programs will open it and, if you have one that will, you can create the association and hopefully make that message go away.

But I still do not know how to create an association to the photo' I want to send.
the info I can give you is, I am on Win7, on Hotmail, and for some reason none of the photos in the file that I transferred from my camera will allow me to send them by e-mail.I am new to win7 and was on Xp before and never had any trouble in down;loading and sending photo's by e-mail.

If you've only a basic installation of Windows 7, you can use either the native "Paint" program or "Windows Photo Viewer". From Explorer, just navigate to where you've downloaded the camera's pictures and double click a .jpeg file. You'll be asked to select a program. Find one of the two I mentioned and click on it. The the picture should now be on your screen. You've not created an association for that file type. You can change it later if you wish. Good luck.
