Is online tech support worthwhile and safe?

I got a call from Ceylon-Tech.com today saying that they could scan my computer and fix any issues they find. Since I am not a tech savvy person it sounds good but, I told the guy I would check out their website. I have looked at reviews for online tech support companies and I am still unsure. At times both my desktop and laptop run slow and seem to install the same updates.

Is there a company that any of you can recommend? Or am I better off getting a local computer repair guy to come in?

Do you trust them enough to give them the key of your car, the key of your house and the codes of your creditcard and bank accounts? If yes, don't hesitate to give them access to your PC also. If not, don't.
