DVD drive will not play commercial DVDs

Dvd drive acting strangely. It will burn anything, cds or dvds. It will read dvds burned from laptop. It will not play any commercial dvd. I have tried old dvds and new ones, still nothing. I first tried uninstalling the drive, didn't work. Also tried deleting the upper and lower filters, still nothing. Then did a total recovery of the OS, still nothing. I'm at a loss. This drive is 2 years old, which isn't that old. I've pulled out the drive and made sure the terminals were clean, and that still didn't fix it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

A DVD drive that acts up is probably done in. No amount of fiddling will get it going. Since, you've already tried the basics and it still doesn't work, then maybe its some firmware issue. You can try updating it and see if that works as a last resort. This maybe related to "regional code play" if commercial discs are movies. If any error is displayed what was it? if you like remove it an test in another PC. use a disc cleaner as well as part of cleaning it. Again if none of this resolves the issue and especially if it doesn't boot from a bootable disc. I use a Ubuntu live Linux version made on another PC, using the required .ISO file. Then install it and see if it boots making sure it is the 1st boot device. Come back with results. Alas, the time and effort maybe better spend buying a replacement. You can also reseat the cabling as well with care.

But rather than dive into the reasons behind Microsoft and such, did you try playing the DVD with VLC PLAYER?
