Windows 7 forum: problems partition

I'm really sorry but it is difficult to follow what you are saying.

1] You have two hard drives, both IDE or is one SATA and the other IDE?

2] Drive 1 (400 GB), has two partitions, one 320 GB and the other 80 GB.

3] Drive 2 is an IDE 80 GB hard drive.

4] You connect the 320 GB drive, (in reality the Drive 1 400 GB drive), as Master, and the Drive 2 (80 GB drive) as slave.

What happens then? What do all these partitions have installed on them?

5] "or view this blast partition the first hard disk" what does that mean?

6] You then connect Drive 2 as Master and Drive 1 as Slave.

What happens then?

What is the question and what is the problem?

Why are you using IDE drives for Windows 7? I'm sure there is nothing intrinsically wrong with that, but IDE is much slower than SATA and Win 7 is a performance hungry OS.

So, both drives are IDE. With IDE drives, the drive that is selected as Master is the drive the BIOS boots from.

In any hard drive, the First Partition needs a bootable OS installed.

What OS is installed on the 320 GB drive's first partition?

Windows 2000 has some very harsh limits on the boot drive. Do you need a refresher on that?

That is, there is no known way for Windows 2000 to boot from a drive/partition over a certain size and then, if we were to add other OSes, it gets messy very fast.

I ran Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4 at last look http://pcsupport.about.com/od/keepingupwithupdates/a/windows-service-pack.htm ) for about 4 years until my new laptop showed up with XP Pro instead.

Again, do we need to start over about W2K?

I might be able to help but I need you to help us along here. Your first post was hard to follow and now with you mentioning Windows 2000 I have joined in because I used it and helped other office mates over the years. Maybe I can help but I would have to guess what the "same thing" is.

We know we can't move the Windows 2000 from its boot location or where it is attached without that OS failing and you didn't share that you knew that. Keep writing and maybe we'll figure what you are trying to do.

-> But let me share that you should FORGET WINDOWS 2000. It was left by the side of the road by Microsoft with some unpatched vulnerbilites that means you would never expose it to the internet today.

That is, pull the 2000 drive out, pop in the new drive and perform a clean fresh install.

Time to move on from Windows 2000, it looks like that means starting over again.

It seems you have XP, Vista and Win 7. Start over.

Install XP first, make sure that is running well.

Install Vista second, make sure you can dual boot XP & Vista and make sure Vista is working well.

Install Win 7 last. Make sure multi-boot works with the other two OSes and ensure Win 7 is working well.

Why in that order? Because the first OS's boot file is over-written by the 2nd OS's boot file. The first OS's boot file is then, again, over-written by the 3rd OS's boot file.

And also, XP's boot.ini will not dual boot Vista or Win 7.
