Windows Update doesn't work...

I just turned on my HP G60-t (Windows 7 Premium) laptop (after being out of use for about 3 months) and when i try clicking "check for updates" i get an error message:

"Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer" - after 2 restarts it still wont work.

Any ideas?

it was correct but i got it in the end...

I changed the setting to do no update automatically and then it worked
