Windows 7 forum: Can't create system restore point I want

When I open my System Restore utility I don't see anything to type in. The first window offers me a restore point already created and if I do not want to use that one I select "Choose a different restore point" then click Next to see others.

Are you sure there is a restore point for the date you need?

What you need to use is the other part of system restore that uses an old restore point to restore the PC back to what it was then.

Bob, I have been in the right place. The restore points given for me to choose are too recent and no earlier ones are listed. Are you saying that I can only restore to an event and not a date?

Before you can restore back to a certain date, there has to have been a "Restore Point" created on that date. If no restore point is available for that date you cannot restore the system back to that date.

However, if there are restore points 'before' that date, they might work. And the same if there are restore points after that date.

System Restore is in two parts;

1] Create a System Restore point. Two ways this is done, either manually by the user, (Start > Search, type in create system restore point), or by the system itself on major changes like just before Windows Updates are installed.

2] Restore back to a previously created restore point.

Have you, or has the system, created a restore point for May 31st?

I wonder if we need to see the full story now. Why do you want to restore back to May 31 specifically?

If earlier dates aren't listed, they aren't available. Bad luck. Time to start thinking about another solution for your (undisclosed) problem maybe.

But I still wonder about your statement about where you typed in the date. System Restore doesn't have such a box to type in so it made me wonder where you were and what you were doing.

However some folk do dream up how they thought it should work and don't tell the forum that they want it to work "like this" so we know they are not writing about the real thing but what they want.

So yes, the System Restore only creates on OS changes. There are long articles somewhere about this but I'll stop here except to note that some new folk exploded when they figured out System Restore does nothing about our files. That is, we only lose what we didn't backup.

This cleared up all doubt for me about what you had written at your first post.

I would not call it a waste as we covered a lot of ground about System Restore.
