Windows 7 forum: Acronis Restoral Prob.- Windows is not Genuine (it IS!)

IM gonna toss all of this stuff out the window - go buy me some sheep and some grazing pastures somewhere where its warm and Im gonna just raise Goats and Sheep - Not even a Timex! LOL

On a serious note: Id like to thank EVERYONE - You all were Extermely Great with your thoughts, comments and remarks. Im a businessman, not a tech. However, being in the computer business, I picked up a lot (just about enough to be dangerous! - hehe <smile> )

After talking to our Microsoft Partner people, they got me the OK re"Activate" the same machine, and would not charge it against our account. (Im tight too-but isnt everyone these days?!) He also hooked me up with someone at Acronis and we signed up for a Partnership there.

So... what was meant for bad, has been turned into GOOD! <smile>

But I DID check the integrity of the image that was made, then I checked the image before I restored it, and they both checked out good! (that surely has to count for at least a point, doesn't it? <grin>

Ive tested so many over the years, that I cant for 110% for sure say I tested this one, I think I did, but just cant say for sure.

A good image to not work. Same for a lot of other bios settings.

But all this is moot. You have the golden ticket version. The one with support from your company and Microsoft. Time to use it.

This sounds more like the OEM version that won't move from machine to machine or will fail if we change too much.

At least with the OEM version you can plead that some lighting bolt killed the machine and they issue a new key,

No one is policing here. You offered the details and folk will use that to see what the options are. You have the golden ticket version so why not use it?

Microsoft isnt the problem, the problem lies in HOW this particular dirve was BACKED-UP or in HOW I backed it up, -or- HOW I restored it -or - the Hardware I restored it TO ... If there were just a couple of variables, Id just do the ole try, try and try again till ya get it .. but with this many variables, I figured Id just ask first.

Someone sent me an email, or I read on a post somewhere, (cant recall now) that there have been problems when using a DIFFERENT drive to restore TO, as well as others reporting SUSPECTING problems when they did not restore their ENTIRE drive, but only the C-Drive as I did (but they were not sure if that WAS the problem in fact).

The sad part is Im finding out the HARD WAY how notorious Acronis really IS when it comes to their Service /Customer Support. Its been over a week and I STILL dont have an answer! This has been the first time in about 2 years that Ive had any problems at all with acronis - I was just hoping someone else knew HOW to Restore the Active Partition (Drive C) onto ANY hard drive. ... but it seems like no one knows for sure... <sigh>

Did you see the part where the 2009 version of Acronis you say you have in your first post will not play nicely with Windows 7; that you need the 2010 version of later to avoid issues?

So, assuming you've already restored from the backup and you are now stuck with the not genuine problem, your only solution really seems to be to call Microsoft and get a fresh set of activation codes. Then upgrade your copy of Acronis to a more recent version with Windows 7 support, or make sure whatever you choose as a replacement is compatible with Windows 7, and then make a fresh image.

A lot of people like to claim this or that company's support is horrible, but the fact tends to be that quite often those people do not give the support staff enough information to go on. Or there are situations where you claim to have the Enterprise version of Windows, but later details do not seem to match up, which has confused us and would certainly confuse someone at a call center. A lot of times, people just tend to blame others when they at least share a big portion of that blame. Maybe not all the blame, but a very significant portion of it, possibly even the majority. The call center reps can only work off of what you give them, so if you give them bad info, knowingly or unknowingly, they have no choice but to assume that is correct. They cannot access your system and go in to verify everything you tell them is correct. And, like almost any other profession you can name, there are people who are really good at their job, and people who are really bad at their job. As the late great George Carlin once put it: Somewhere out there, is the worst doctor. Process of elimination, there has to be a worst doctor. And the scary thing about that is, someone has an appointment with them tomorrow! So don't be so quick to blame the call center people when you seem to be feeding us bad info, and completely ignoring the fact that your version of Acronis has known issues with Windows 7.

You seem to be fishing for a specific answer, and are trying to herd us all in that direction, where you are completely free and clear of any responsibility or guilt in the matter, and it's all the fault of Acronis... Well, the best we can do is say that Acronis 2009 has known issues with Windows 7, but you failed to test your backup before deploying it, and also failed to ensure that a program released before Windows 7 would work with Windows 7 before using it to make a backup. You also seem to have either knowingly or unknowingly misled us regarding the fact that you have the Enterprise version of Windows. I will abstain from making any kind of judgment as to your intent. These are all lumps that you must accept. As the wise sages from Car Talk once said about having a spat with your spouse: You can either choose to be right, or you can choose to be happy. Right now, you're choosing to be right. Let us know when you're ready to give up being right and be happy instead.

Acronis is too presumptuous and if you aren't careful you could have fallen prey to one of its defaults, ie. after a full backup it presumes further backups are incremental UNLESS you set it to default to full backup every time. An incremental restore by itself is non-functional. You need to restore the full backup first, then all incrementals to reach latest snapshot state. Your problem is unlikely to be software driver related. Not finding Bootmgr is before OS loads.

Acronis still a very very reliable backup program, just not a point-and-shoot category. Why don't you get on the phone with their tech and explain the situation, or else escalate.
