Windows 7 forum: Windows 7 SP1 not installing

I have not even heard of a Network Professional version of service Pack one, however I think that its worth trying, please give a link to the address of the site where I would obtain the service pack Jerry. No twb its not attempting to run simply can not get it from Microsoft. I think that both of these lines of inquiry are excellent and I would like to see if there are anything to either one of these ways of proceeding before I go re-image the laptop which will take a while.

Here is the link I think Jimmy was referring to. It allows you to download a installer that will search your puter and install what is needed for sp1. I have used it before but your better off doing it online if at all possible. It works well but like Jimmy stated if you have other problem it can cause things to get worst.

When I asked you if it was trying to run I was referring to the AV not sp1. What I meant was did the AV install and start to run and then you got the message that you needed sp1.

Also it would help if we knew the make and model of the puter that you have. Is it a Sony, HP, Toshiba or one of the many that are available. We could also use the model number. With the make and model people can give you more precise advice on what to try.

It would also be helpful to know if there is any other security programs installed. Do you have a stand alone firewall? Was there a previous AV or Internet Suite? These can cause problem if they where no uninstalled properly to failed in someway.

Here is the information on the anti-virus: it is Mc Affee's Total Protection software. What has happened is I installed the software on a laptop then a week latter the software says that the PC is vunerable and to check with the software to resolve problems. When I do that it says that I need to activate the software and gives me an icon to do that. When the Icon is clicked it does nothing, I then contacted tech-support via Mc Affee's online chat function. After some chatting they found that the laptop was running on Windows 7 and did not have sp1 installed and told me that their anti-virus really needs SP1 to operate properly. I then whent to download and install SP1 and could not do so, when I consulted with Geek Squad they advised me that this means that there is something wrong with the OS and I will need to re-install that. Now I am not adverse to doing the reinsall but since it can be a lengthy process I want to get a concurring oppinion to that of Geek Squad, hence my reason for posting here. Now I am told that I can get a professional version of SP1, which may mean that I can install the software. However, I may have deeper problems then I realize so my question is this - What is my best way to proceed, so far I have three optioins:
1) Re-image the latop and re-install Windows 7
2) Download and install Windows 7SP1 Professional; or
3) Some other method recommended by others.

First thing to cover is that the Geek Squad standard reply is to tell the customer they have to re-image the system back to factory speck so they do not have to do any work. I learned a long time ago to ignore them.

The first thing I would do is try to uninstall the McAfee software and then try to do the sp1 update. It might be that something in it is corrupt and is stopping the update.

I would only try downloading the installer for sp1 as the very last resort. I have used it and can attest to the fact that it can cause more problems if the machine is already acting up. I have used it 5 or so times and one of them failed causing a complete reload of the system.

Where did you get the copy of McAfee? Did it come with the puter? McAfee is not one of the Internet security suites that I would recommend. There is so called free version of different suites that float around the internet that are malware pretending to be security Suites. If your looking for free security there are plenty that can be recommended by the our fellow members. I think one of the moderators has a list of the good free ones.

I still would like to have the make and model of the puter your using. It helps to know what this is running on.

I would strongly recommend that you back up all your personal data. What you have typed so far makes me think that the personal data you have on the puter could be at risk.

I have had mc affee for many years. I started many years ago with an old DOS based PC and Norton, the first year I tried norton and it did not run and did not do anything, I was able to trick the software into going. The next year I bought another license for norton and the second year as well the security software would not run so I tried the same trick from the eyar before and it was smart enough not to fall for the same trick as last year, I was able to throw a switch and get the software to run. The third year I tried everything to get the software to run and nothing I did worked it simply would do nothing. So I looked around at my undergraduate school and noticed that the school used Mc Affee and they had a lot of PCs so I tried a trial the MC Affee sent me after seeing the school's success with it and I have stayed ever since and that was something like 20 years ago and Mc Affee has been good to me ever since. Until the PC problem came up this year with my older laptop. I have had a lot of trouble with Dell PCs and I seem to think that this is a problem that Dells tend to have. The laptop I am typing on right now is a Toshiba Satellite C and its working great, this time around when I chose a laptop rather than trying to figure out more information then the computer industry magazines I simply opened PC Magazine and looked at what they recommended, they are always recommending Toshiba Satellites. Coincidentally the Dell laptop and the dell desktop that I had came with Mc Affee. I have had a lot of success with Mc Affee, however if I am asked to recommend a security software I typically recommend what PC Magazine tends to recommends Norton and Avg.
