Phantom Gigs

hi All - if this has been answered elsewhere just point me to it. Hovering over a folder, I see it contains 4Gigs. However, there's nothing in there that's 4Gigs big. So where and what is that phantom 4Gigs. This happened before but at least I knew what was supposed to be in the folder - photo files - but I couldn't see them - so whether they are there or not, I've effectively lost them. I have ticked 'show hidden files'. So is there actually something in this folder that's 4Gigs big ?

Clarification request: Did you try the old fashioned way?

Open a command window, CD over to there and the usual DIR /A ?

Or the new fangled way? Boot up a Live CD such as Ubuntu to look around?

It might help to know which folder.

Also, when you ticked, "Show hidden files", did you also untick, "Hide System files and folders (Recommended)"?

hi Mark - I thought I replied to your response - but maybe I didn't.
Anyway, this issue turns up every now and a gain - right click/properties on a folder shows a certain content (1gig, 4gigs whatever) but when opening the folder that content is not there - there may be other things in the folder but none are that stated size. There's obviously no quick answer to this conundrum so I'll leave it there.

If I have my app open a file, write out gigabytes that file may show 0 bytes until I close the file. This seems to confuse users. Nothing broke but can annoy folk.
