Install Windows 7 in own partition

I have a valid Windows 7 upgrade CD. But I want to install Windows 7 in its own partition and keep Windows Vista. I have a boot manager which can boot multiple OSs.

What is the best way to install Windows 7 in its own partitition and keep Windows Vista.

You can't, legally anyway. Upgrade versions of Windows do not contain a license, they merely transfer the license from an existing copy, so either Vista or Windows 7 would be running without a license doing what you propose.

You'll need to take your upgrade disc back and trade up to a full retail version to stay on the legal up and up. Then it's just a simple matter of pointing the Windows 7 installer at the secondary partition you have set up if you're planning to use the Windows boot manager. If you have some third party program, you'll have to consult the documentation for that program to figure out any specific steps you may need to take.

I'm going with no. MSFT has made this rather ornery as to install. If you didn't find a web page about this, then it's as you suspected. You'll need the retail full license.

Windows 7 did not keep its changes to just that partition. It went and changed other partitions along with the boot area.

So the link while useful does not appear to do what the member asked.

and in fact the OP has a Windows 7 Upgrade disk, not the full version.

So it seems your method will fail.
