Help regarding connecting Laptop TO Desktop using LAN CABLE

Hello friends I am new on this forum
I just bought a laptop and I was trying to connect it to my desktop by using LAN CABLE for data transfer.
I have tried everything my way but it is not working
I am Using Windows7 Ultimate edition for desktop and Windows 7 Premium for laptop

Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections -> Local Area Connection -> Properties -> Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) -> Properties

I set my computer's ID to 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
GateWay : 192.268.1.1

I set my Laptop's ID to 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
GateWay : 192.268.1.1


What more I need to do to connect them?
Please help me as soon as possible.

For starters, you have both computers set to have the same IP address, which won't work. IP addresses are like street addresses, they need to be unique otherwise how do you know if a bit of data goes to this computer or that computer? If there are 5 houses on a street with the same address, how does the post office know which house gets which bit of mail?

Second, it's minor, but it's ethernet cable, or even just patch cable. LAN cable could mean virtually anything capable of carrying some kind of networking signal. It could be some phone cable for a null modem, coaxial cable, FDDI cable, just to name a few.

So change the IP address on one computer, it doesn't matter which, and then go through the homegroup section in the control panel to get you the rest of the way. There are also literally hundreds of web pages out there devoted to this topic covering virtually every possible combination you can think of for networking two Windows computers from a simple P2P network like you want, to the ridiculously complex that you'll never see outside of server farms or data centers. It's amazing what a few minutes spent with your favorite search engine can turn up.

It should be

What machine is at 192.268.1.1?

From my experience the Gateway must be on your LAN or you must provide a route to it via the route command.

Did you try APIPA?

When I wanted to use that Windows Transfer Wizard I didn't need to assign addresses! I left it on DHCP and it all worked out fine.
