I want to create a new partition and install a clean copy of Windows 7. Then, I want to use the included Windows Virtual PC to access and run all the existing software that is on the current Windows XP partition.

Basically, I want to install a clean copy of Windows 7 to avoid all the glitches that typically come from upgrading. And, I don't want to have to go through and re-install all the existing software onto a new emulation of XP.

and no that won't work, but you can install Win 7, (all the right drivers of course), then download and install both Virtual PC and XP mode into that, then within XP Mode install all the XP software you are currently using. But note, they will have to be installed into that XP Mode, you can't run these programs from within Win 7 or from within XP Mode from the existing Win XP partition.

Just a note about installing Win 7.

Whether you install on a different partition or a different internal hard drive, you should understand that the Dual Boot menu you see will run off the XP partition. That means, to access Win 7 to boot it up, it will look for the BCD file it installed on the XP partition and replaced XP's boot.ini file. So if you delete tha XP partition at some later date, Win 7 will become inaccessible.

A possible correction.

You can only install Virtual PC and thus XP Mode on Windows 7 Ultimate or Professional, but not lower versions of Win 7.

When you Download XP mode

it install everything you need. You don't need to install Windows Virtual PC then XP mode. Just install XP mode and it installs everyhting needed. But remember to install virus protection in that Windows machine. I just installed Microsoft Essentials. I use it if I ever need to run Foxpro for Windows 2.6. Visual Foxpro runs fine in Windows 7.

But let's just say it took a day and a lot of work. But it NEVER did exactly what I think you have in mind.

So my answer is no. It's unlikely you will create the image and run it in VPC.

At 2GB RAM you will scream at the performance. I would not do this.

While this DOES NOT DO WHAT YOU ASKED ABOVE it is as close as it gets today.
