i am trying to back the WHOLE disk...

when i looked for details to see what is going to backed up and available for recovery, i noticed that the 3rd partition is not going to be available for recovery.

it is not the recovery partition, that is the 1st one on my list (1.5GB, roughly 300 MB of data in it). in the physical display, this is after the "c" drive.

acronis, just click backup whole disk and whatever partitions that are backup-able will be backed up. The recovery partition will not be selected by the program. And yes there is a recovery partition on practically all new PCs but you can't read the contents and it isn't lettered to be ordinarily visible. When you restore the disk with acronis it will overwrite the boot and main partitions and leave the recovery partition alone, provided you select "as-is" option.

300 MB of data isn't enough to recover your c:\partition to factory conditions. The Windows 7 DVD is few GB, and it can't be much less.

Kees_B..agree...300MB is not enough even for the old windows OS. this big one has to be the recovery partition.

I use Acronis myself although it is a licensed version from Seagate the hard drive supplier.

Acronis don't make it easy to follow and could do better in my view, but where it displays the 3 partitions there should be, (may be), an option above that to "Select all" or select the whole disk.

If you haven't tried that, see if that works.

I have used mine a couple of times recently to make "whole image backups", but I did struggle with understanding what Acronis was offering me. I got there eventually and I hope you will be able to as well. I used their Help files extensively, and they did help, a little.

whole disk vs partiton

thanks markflax...i did create the backup using the "whole disk" option...for recovery, i was planning to try on a different drive so i know i have a back when the disaster really happens. since the drive size is different, the only option was by partition.

i will look for the "all" button.
