Windows 7 forum: Windows update download schedule.

And I corrected it in the previous post.

But the problem is that I use to sleep earlier than that...

If there's no possibilites I will just download them every week-end, but I'll still wait for a solution if available.

In the Windows Update dialog, in the upper left is "Change Settings".

If you try that Change Settings option, you can schedule when the system checks for and downloads the updates to a time that suits you.

Then you can install them when you wish.

The only schedule option available is for Installation, while Download goes weither automatically or after I hit the button. I can't set time for DOWNLOAD.

I still don't see any answer to my problem, if no further options are available, I'll use that one.

In Windows Update, upper left side do you have the following options?
Check for updates
Change settings
...
Select, Change Settings.
You should now be in a Window, "Choose how Windows can install updates".
Under Important Updates choose, "Install updates automatically".
Next choose, what day and what time you want to install the updates.

Seems like I've made a mistake in the previous message, I meant I can't choose when to Download them.

After all, I've come to compromise that there are no solutions to that outside the box, I just have to fit with the available options. ( I mean there is no way to use any third-party program that might manage these kinds of downloads)

I took that to mean that you could, and would prefer, to have the computer download Windows Updates during the night/early morning when there was no cap on downloading.

The options Ken has given you allows you to do that. With the computer on overnight of course, setting a schedule for the OS to check for updates every night at 3:00 am (or whatever time you wish), and then download them if there are any. You have already selected to be notified of any updates so you can install them when you wish.

Now I am not sure how well that would work because I haven't tried it, but it does seem to be the answer to your problem.

What have I missed in that interpretation?

I have just recorded my problem using Windows "Record steps to reproduce a problem"

You can just open it using your browser, it's an .mht file.

Important steps are: 4 , 9 , 14 , others were just recorded because of the extra clicks.

Or did you mean that after it checks for updates it will ask me for a starting time ? But I don't think so, that should have happened earlier.

Ps: Read comments.

By starting time I mean that I won't have to click for the download to be started, but being able to let the download start automatically at a specific time.

I've never used Windows "Record steps to reproduce the problem" before. Very nice indeed and could be very useful for other problems we come across in these forums.

But back to your problem. I see it now.

In Step 6 and also Step 11 you have displayed the pull-down list under the "Important Updates".

Whichever you choose, apart from the top option, "Install updates automatically (recommended)", the scheduling option is greyed out. Not only that, the scheduling option only applies to "Install new updates".

My apologies. I believed, incorrectly, that this scheduling could be used for all options.

It doesn't look as if you can do as you wish, ie, download updates at a time you wish, but do not install then and wait for your permission to install.

That said, I wonder if it would still work, and the only way to see is to try it.

If you select the top option and change the time to one of your suiting, then go back to the list and select "Download updates but let me choose...", that new time sticks.

Are you up for a little testing?

Just some clarification, please.

As I understood your request, first I will have to select the Install updates automatically options.
Then select the installation time.
Then apply these.
Then directly after it select "Download updates but let me choose...".
Then the downloads are supposed to be started as the greyed out Installation time shows ?

Seems weird, a bit illegitimate I'd say, but if that's what you mean, I will give it a try.

I don't know if it will work that way and it will likely fail, hence the test.

You realise that any testing may take a while. Microsoft only releases updates on the 2nd Tuesday of every month, (apart from an occasional very important update), so you don't need to do test this every night, but then, if your leave the computer on each night it will do no harm.
