While you are inside you would also check that the heatsinks are in place, fans look OK, etc.

Thanks Bob, I've now cleaned inside, little to do in fact, fans and sinks look okay too. Still shutting down.

As in a LiveCD. Let's use this article as an example on making and booting it.

With that booted you can try using a browser to the internet and see if it runs longer.

--> Keep in mind you elected to share only what you have (no make, model, etc.) so I can't comment on the old issues we run into with machines with, well who knows if that even applies here?

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_crashes lists it. Good idea to eject it.

I got about 36 hours trouble free and am now shutting down again.
I get about 30 mins first time round after a long shut down then decreasing intervals of function.
Any further ideas would be very welcome...

I didn't find much except that model uses Intel's heat sink system which you find one or more of the clips to come loose.

Did you check that this heat sink has all 4 pins in their proper spots?

Did you try it with the cover off?

So far as I can tell the heat sink is intact and soundly fitted.
I just took the cover off again and it shut down again.

It's possible there is something in the Event Viewer.

Since the LiveCD doesn't help it's likely to be hardware. Some folk add video cards and drives but you have not shared such a detail.

Let's look at the Event Viewer for clues. Use Safe Mode if need be.

Yes there is a video card, I forgot to add that when moving between computers.
NVIDIA GeForce 7100
Software Version 2.5.395.24
There are plenty of clues in Event Viewer but I've no idea how to interpret them.

I don't see any yet but if there are too many, clear ALL the logs, and crash it. I usually boot SAFE MODE then clear it and a normal boot (if this is the typical failure) will crash then SAFE MODE to get the clues out.

It's an acquired skill or you just plug the messages into google and see what comes up.

But since the Linux test failed, I am leaning to a more hardware failure. I'd do the basic cleaning and replacing all the heat sink compounds first.

The art of acquiring this particular skill eludes me I'm afraid - I've done the log clear and restart etc to find these codes. I've Googled 7001 too but it quickly becomes a language I'm not familiar with with MS references to Windows Server 2008 which I'm not running.

Event id 7001 - dependency cervice or group failed to start
Event id 10005 - DCOM got error 1068 attemtping to start the service
Event id 7036 - fdPHost with arguments "" in order to run the server

I've done the cleaning but not the heat sink compounds...

Those errors rarely cause a lockup.

And Microsoft is not going to change their ways. That is, there is a lot of commonality between Server 2008 and Windows 7. You'll notice patches will be issued for both systems. The folk that troubleshoot and maintain Windows usually figure this out if no one tells them.

http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-xp/dcom-errors-freezing-pc/102180.html is old, about another OS but it turned out to be hardware again.

And since your Linux LiveCD failed, I think it is hardware and would do the same today with the case cover, fan and more.

At this point you should have completed the cleaning and heat sink compound work but you haven't confirmed or told it wasn't done.
