Manage updates with the Download App
I have two computers, they each have basically the same programs on each computer. They each run well. My desktop uses Vista and has about 15 gigabytes, about half the disk space is used and half is free. The Notebook uses Windows 7 and has 58.5 GB with approximately 42 GB used and only 16 GB free space. This seems unusual. I would appreciate comments or suggestions why this situation exist.

or to pin the differences down, but Desktops and Notebooks are vastly different machines anyway and this will have an effect.
Also, are both of these machines self-build or OEM, (Original Equipment Manufacturer), supplied from a maker or a retail store? Are they from the same maker? We know that the different makers and suppliers install their own software anyway, and that will be another difference.
Also, settings will be different. For example, System Restore backup files can take up a load of hard disk space and if one system has more Restore Points than the other, then that will also account for the difference.
It will not be easy tracking this down.

Thank you for your reply. both computers are Dell. I suspect it may be ins Systems Restore

The space on the system disk of my Windows 7 system, as shown by with Treesize Free (free download from JAM Software), ran in Administrator mode:
15.6 GB Windows
6.4 GB System Volume Information (that's system restore, and volume shadow copy if enabled)
5.2 GB files in the root folder (swapfile and hibernation file)
4.5 GB in Program Files
1.4 GB in Users (5 users, only the minimal data, Documents and such moved to another disk)
1.1 GB in Program Data
972 MB in MSOCache (MS Office installation data)
427 MB in Recovery (no idea what it is, but it seems related to Windows)
320 MB in Temp (a folder I made myself)
56 MB in $Recycle.Bin (recycle bin)
11 MB in BJPrinter (related to my Canon Printer)
3.1 MB in Intel (related to my motherboard)
0.1 MB in inetpub
That makes 35.759,6 MB in totally.
As it's a 64 GB SSD I think it's fine as it is. No need for cleaning the system restore area and my Temp folder yet.
Now tell how your disk space is used, using the same tool, so we can see if there is anything unusual.
