Another option would be to try the compatibility modes in Windows 7. Maybe they work and maybe they don't, but they're baked into the OS so may as well give them a try.

Hi Jimmy
Did give the XP compatibility mode a try but appeared to be too complex and it didn't seem to work quite right. Another response I got to my problem suggested a prog called Scribus and it looks as if this will work for me. Thanks again for your reply.

There is a free program called Scribus that might do the trick for you. It's a very good desktop publishing type program. Unfortunately Scribus, while powerful, doesn't support QuarkXpress files.

Hi Ken
Thanks for your reply. I downloaded Scribus but haven't delved right into the programme yet but at first look the programme seems to be quite similar to Quark Xpress and I will most likely be able to work it out. Anything would be easier than OPEN OFFICE!!!

Technically LibreOffice is a fork of OpenOffice, and last I heard there were a few grumblings about there being a new release of OpenOffice in the not too distant future. Which is really the only reason I mention it, because if OpenOffice does indeed rise from the dead, so to speak, then it may provide a source of confusion to some.

LibreOffice is based on OpenOffice, but is a parallel development effort. One might think of them as siblings.

Scribus query

Hi Ken
Downloaded Scribus and it appears very similar to Quark XPress.
Do you have much experience with Scribus? If you do, I have one small query - should there be a tools panel visible so that I can work with a document. If there is such a panel, how do I get it? If I can make this panel appear, then I should be able to work with the program. Look forward to your reply (if you know).

Tools Panel?

Most of the tools are available on the top and bottom tool bars. First go to the File menu hit Document Setup to set your default page and tool properties before you start a project. Once you've started progress on your document check under the Windows menu, Properties, Outline, etc.

The Scribus website has some really good tutorials to get you going. Do the "Getting Started with Scribus" tutorial. It's in the Help menu, Online Tutorials. The Scribus wiki is very helpful as well.

Thanks for your reply which I found really helpful in being able to work out the program. I have played around with the program using the tutorials (which you suggested to me) and I may have worked out the program to a certain extent. Will keep on trying.

Once you get some text and graphics on your page the right mouse button is where most of your actions will come from.
