SSD and 7200 drive images.

Happy Easter!!

I intend to buy a new budget computer system shortly.
It has a 60 GB SSD SATA 2 and I have a spare Seagate 500GB SATA 3 drive. Will the two drives function together?
If not, I'll just have to get another 500 GB SATA 3 drive.
Another problem is that all my data/music /photos has been saved on a SATA 2 external HD. Will I be able to transfer it to a SATA 3 Drive okay?
Finally, can the image tool in Windows 7 do a full system backup if two drives are installed?

Why wouldn't they function together? As far as the OS is concerned, they're both storage devices, it's up to the device's hardware to take care of the rest. You seem to be overthinking this by quite a bit.

Just two different standards. SATA 2 vs SATA 3. I thought they may be incompatible?

Not really, they're two different versions of the same standard, and for all intents and purposes, the only difference is the max theoretical speed. But just like USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with 2.0, and 2.0 works with 1.1, and 1.1 works with 1.0, SATA is designed to be backwards compatible.

If you think about it... Just because you might be able to run really fast doesn't mean you can't also walk.

Microsoft's backup and restore has failed me too many times. Today I use CLONEZILLA and Acronis. You can test Microsoft's backup app again and find like I did it works 99.9% of the time. That .1% is when it matters?

http://www.windows7hacker.com/index.php/2009/08/how-to-back-up-your-entire-hard-drive-in-windows-7-using-create-a-system-image/ shows you can pick which drive to backup.

But again, it failed for me.

Try Seagate's web site

and look for their Disk Wizard free software. It is a version of Acronis TrueImage and allows for either cloning or disk imaging.

I've just used it myself successfully.

just make sure your C: drive can fit

the disk wizard can't decide what needs to go where. so move your "Documents" folder and your other stuff elsewhere and make sure what's left on your C: (boot) drive is less than 50GB. windows could start complaining if your boot drive is more than 80% full (and no room for sys restore).
