Just to be clear, you mean right click the Computer icon, (either on the Desktop or in the Start Menu, then select "Manage").

I'm confused about what you say. In my Computer Management I don't see any "Users" listed except the Users folder under Local Users and Groups. Image of mine below;

And my account, MDFlax, is listed as it is.

So I am unsure what to say, especially if you created this account during setup with your proper name at the time.

What does User Accounts show in the Control Panel?

But generally changing account names can lead to problems and I would think very carefully before attempting it. Perhaps try it on a dummy account first, which has software installed and settings changed, to see what problems occur.

There is a method to do it, and it involves treating your account as corrupted, creating a new account, then copying your profile across to the new account, but since you say this account is your name anyway, that won't work without deleting your named account first.

Well that's confusing

and I must say I am stumped.

You say your account is an Admin capable account, but is there anything strange with that? I mean, were you set up by someone else, and did they set you up as a Limited User initially and change you later?

I see there is another named account and that lists correctly. Is that significant?

If this were me I would shrug and ponder, but if my system was working fine as it is, I would leave it alone.

I haven't seen any questions about changing names in the Management Console before, but I have seen cases where users have attempted to change their user names by other means, and have come off 2nd best.

Must have come from initial setup

System was setup by myself. I did the setup before setting up users; so as can be seen from this image: http://gedochin.com/user1.jpg both my name and that of other user are cleary shown.

Thanks again for your advice. I think I'll be better off leaving it as is.

Interesting, but still strange

I wonder...

I noticed that the 2nd user is a Standard user, not an Administrator. The only difference I can see with my setup is that I have a 2nd Admin capable account. So, would you care for a test?

What if you create a 2nd Admin capable account? It is a good idea anyway, password protected of course and don't forget the password. Good idea because if you ever did have any problems with your own account, you would at least have a spare Admin capable account to attempt to resolve issues. It is well known in these forums where users who only have the one Admin account that gets corrupted they have little choice but to reinstall the OS. In XP it was worse because XP allowed users to continue using the default Administrator Account after they turn the system on the first time, and if they don't create their own account, they are stuck if anything goes wrong. With Vista and Win 7 it is a little easier because they both force us to create our own Admin accounts during Setup/Install, but even then, the hidden System Administration account needs to be enabled before it can be accessed. Having 2 Admin accounts of your own is easier.

Sorry for the long description, I got sidetracked.

Why the test? I just wonder if, with 2 Admin capable accounts, Computer Management can no longer call you "user" because there would be two of you, so it defaults to names.

What do you think?

May I suggest, just to stretch Privacy concerns to its limits, you remove both your images from Gedochin.com, or I can ask the Forum Admin to remove the links in your posts if that web site is your own. It is just that you have images and names available in those links and this is a public forum that anyone can read. I might be taking Privacy too far.

IT probably chose "user" for all their clients so they don't have to name each uniquely. Are you sure there isn't a "my real name" account under Administrators in Groups. Most likely if you are in a domain. And you shouldn't be logging into a local account if you want access to domain resources.
