Win 7 laptop, unresponsive after login

Hi Cnet,

Yesterday after booting my laptop, I filled in my log in details. They were submitted correctly and the Welcome screen appeared whith the loading circle. Then the screen went black and all that was left was a responsive cursor switching between its normal and loading skin.

I must have rebooted ten times, and the same results have appeared. I managed to login after an hour one time but that just wont do.

Any Ideas?

Too many causes.

From some USB thing plugged in (unplug all please) to malware to conflicting software, this one requires a lot more detail to figure it out. Reload the OS usually cures it unless there is a hardware issue.

But look at the details. We read a laptop but not which one? It matters as some models like the dv6000/9000 are known to do this.

Thanks Bob,

I had a bunch of music equipment plugged in, but I took everything out, as well as the mouse and the second screen. Didn't change anything sad

As for the laptop model its an HP pavillion hp6910, I've just managed to log in, taking half an hour this time.

Actually my laptop was lying to me, I just did an image search and its not a 6910, but it looks just like a dv6000!

I'll lead off with "Be sure you don't have files you can't lose on those models."

Type DV6000 RECALL to learn about this model and what fails.

But the sluggish login, once you are in should be tested by creating another spare admin account and trying that account. The results can tell plenty.

We found software conflicts and had to clean that up.

Oh wow, I might want to copy 2 terms of college work somewhere else then! And those issues under recall are a bit ghastly.

My account has admin abilities but there is another account that my father used to use which was the original admin, I suppose I can compare against that?

I seem to lose processing power every day and have been thinking about a new laptop/desktop since my whole career will depend on computers, any recommendations?

You never learn the "computer ate my life" lesson first hand.

I recommend you have DROPBOX with a few (2GB is free) things you can't lose.

Today there are many fine laptops out there and for college I suggest the 13 to 15 inch models and then it gets less specific from there. My personal laptop has a nice aluminum top and seems pretty nice but it's less than a year old so time will tell. But the metal cases seem to be a really good idea. Keeps heat under control and more.

use your father admin user

In some cases win 7 can corrupt your profile.

1. use your father admin user
2. access your profile
3. backup your data outside your profile (for example in: c:\backup)
4. make an restore point
4. delete your profile
5. logon with your credentials and win 7 will recreate your profile
6. restore your data on your new profile.
