Windows 7 forum: Yahoo instant message sound alert problem

Thanks for getting back so quickly. I tried downloading it but you have to pay for it and my computer wouldn't allow me to download even the free trial. I just don't understand why Yahoo have done this. There was a sound alert and now there most definitely isn't one! Is there any way of communicating directly with Yahoo where they will actually listen and respond?

Ok I've managed to download one of those sounds - thanks! But I can't see how to get it into Yahoo Mail so that it works when an instant message arrives. I have Windows 7 - what is the exact procedure for getting this message alert to work within Yahoo Mail when an instant message arrives? Yahoo Mail isn't something I've downloaded so it isn't in my C drive - it's a website you log in and out of... So I haven't a clue how to link the two together. Any help would be very gratefully received.

Actually I meant Yahoo chat within the new Yahoo Mail, not the separate Yahoo Messenger! Sorry about the confusion - I think you must have thought I meant Yahoo Messenger itself but I didn't. I mean Yahoo Chat within Yahoo Mail - it has its own instant messaging feature which you can access when you're logged into Yahoo Mail. And it's there that the sound alert no longer works, since they updated Yahoo Mail just a couple of weeks ago.

Yes I did think this was Yahoo's standalone IM. My fault, I haven't used IMs for so long I had forgotten that things have moved on.

I am now having problems searching for clues and answers because I cannot resolve whether they are talking about a stand-alone IM or Yahoo Chat's messenger.

A question for you. Do others you chat to have similar problems?

Yes that's right - it's quite confusing. In answer to your question, I only chat to one person regularly and they still have the old Yahoo which still has the old message alert. I can't get the old Yahoo back because once it's updated itself that's it - you can't go back. It's late here in the UK now so I will try that link you kindly sent in the morning. Thanks so much for all your help!

Yes, nice to see a fellow Brit here but can you help with my Yahoo problem?? It's driving me mad and has rendered Yahoo chat useless for me, which is a pain as I liked it there....

Also I have to ask, I saw reference somewhere that this new Yahoo sound alert was very quiet, and users had to increase the volume. Is that the case with yours?

Yes I read somewhere that the new sound alert is very quiet but think that may have been referring to a previously updated version of Yahoo chat, not this current one. And in any case, all my volume levels are set to maximum and I can't find anywhere within Yahoo Mail where you can turn the sound up further. Unless I've missed something there? But all I can find there is the option to tick the message alert sound on or off. I've got it turned on and - nothing. Not even a whisper. Very annoying and frustrating...
