Windows 7 forum: After Installing Windows 7, Updates kill me

So out of all of that you are just commenting on my problem? No real advice at all?
The computer is a Home Build intel Q6600 with 4gb of Ram and 750 GB.
Then again I already had Windows 7 installed. I'm Reinstalling it, for some reason it never boots up after updates.
And I was trying to click reply and I guess I clicked best answer?

Let me copy it and add one more line in the form of "advice."

1. You are accepting drivers from Microsoft.
Most of us have learned NEVER to do that!

Advice: Don't accept or update drivers from Microsoft.



2. I was taking three partitions and making two
OK, this is an expert setup. Time to accept that you are going to get into trouble. Keep your backups current.

Advice: Make backup copies so you can get back to when you didn't have trouble.



3. MMC in Safe Mode.
Yup. Expect that!

Advice: This is supposed to happen. For advice on this I think more learning about this OS is needed but this is not a bug. Just a limitation. To get deeper into this, error messages are required as well as what needed to be done (sometimes there is another way.)



4. Here's the BIG ONE. While I read how you killed 7 with Vista over permissions, I could not find the make, model of the machine. WHY IT MATTERS is that I do encounter Vista machines that can not run 7. I have one of those so it's stuck in Vista forever.

Advice: If you are going to try something new and untested, make a backup first.


Sorry but your post reads like you are moving from user to expert and are starting to feel the pain.

MMC in Safe Mode

The error wasn't in Safe Mode the error was in the Event Viewer. Now maybe because I was in Safe mode it could diagnose the problem correctly. That could be.

Once in a while you get a new owner that opens the Event Viewer and thinks that every entry needs investigating. While I applaud that effort we need to step back and focus on what caused them to look there.

I don't have that story. I do have a story about a very bad move about permissions which could be a great start to a "Windows Annoyance" article. That is, shouldn't Microsoft make a tool to reinstall the OS and save the user's files and optionally the apps?

It's been 16+ years of Windows (more if we go to Windows 1.0) and after all this time, why must we reinstall the OS to recover from heavy damage AND lose the user's files and apps?

Apple did it long ago.

I'm not promoting Apple but why does Microsoft and many support calls end with "reinstall the OS."

I had screwed up the permissions on the Windows 7 Drive. Really I had taken all the permissions off my Windows 7 drive. I had tried every way possible to restore permissions to a Drive when I don't have any permissions. (doesn't really happen).

The dead end is when I found the command TAKEOWN to actually give permissions to the drive from the user that is logged in. But when I get the error that the user doesn't have administrator permissions (even though I do) I realized a re-install was the only other option.

Now with that said, I hadn't used Vista in over two months anyways. It only had 5gb free on its own drive. I knew it was time to combine the Windows 7 and Vista drives together.

With that all said. The problem had nothing to do with anything I even talked about. I started to reinstall Windows 7 again. This time I downloaded the AMD drivers myself and installed them. It Rebooted, it would get back to the desktop no start menu or even a mouse. I left it that way thinking maybe the drivers just needed to take a while to finish.

Came back still no start menu. I move my mouse around and I see it come accross my screen (something I hadn't seen before). I right click and go to Desktop Resolution. I guess this is when it kind of hit me.
The reason I bought this HD5700 card was because it had HDMI out. I use this HDMI out to send an image through my walls over to my TV. I didn't even think that after I install the graphi drivers that my TV was Monitor 1. As we know, what I was seeing was just the extended desktop. No Task Bar and all.

I switched it to have my Monitor has the Primary and everything works fine. I hadn't used my TV as a monitor for some time, even less after I got my Tablet.

Now I know.

This is now Solved I guess!

reinstall = install over the top of something existing such as a partition or old windows that is broken.

In this case I'd go all the way back to the beginning. That is I'd remove all partitions, and boot my 7 DVD and let it do the partitioning.

That way we have a clean install without being dogged by the past or issues with partition nuttiness.
