Windows 7 forum: Can't get Win7 critical updates

If not, then you should do so NOW.. Have you never burned data to a DVD or CD?

And next, do you have recovery discs for your computer? (It would sure help if you gave us the make and model number of the computer as such might help us regarding recovery options.) Or does your computer have a recovery partition? (For example, pressing F10 or F11 on an HP computer will frequently give you the ability reformat the computer and reinstall everything back to its original factory condition.

No I haven't ever burned data to a DVD or CD. I have a recovery disc, but I've moved twice since I got this computer, so I'm not even sure where the heck it is! I'm really starting to get bummed about this, since NO one seems to know how to get this problem fixed and they're only updates for Pete's sake... Even Microsoft is having difficulty figuring out the problem. I have no idea what the heck to do now and I'm slowly starting to believe that this problem isn't going to go away.

That's the model number I found in one of the attachments I sent to Microsoft. 6.1.7601 is the Service Pack #.
x64-based PC is the system type. Anything else you need to know about the computer? It's all in the attachment I sent Microsoft!

1. Order the recovery disk(s) with the maker if you can't find them.
2. Find a repair shop and ask them to (a) backup all your data, (b) install the recovery disks and (c) restore all your data from the backup.
3. Then, when you have the machine back, install other programs that aren't on the recovery disk but you installed earlier yourself (could be MS Office or antivirus or whatever).
4. Be sure to get the recovery disks back and store them on a safe place.

It won't be free, but it should work.

Thanks Kees_B... but as I've mentioned several times in all these threads, mostly with "Grif" and to other vry nice folks here, I am on a VERY limited income with disability being my only income, so I can't afford to take it to a repair shop, and am trying to talk a good pc friend (or 2-3) to come over and take a look for themselves! Hopefully, with God's blesing, one of them'll come and get me up and running again... maybe not.... I'm at the mercy of you guys and my friends, Microsoft & of course God's help with getting this seemingly simple problem fixed! I've never had an update problem, so this is completely greek to me, lol!

For CNET guys Helping me** (I usually do complete scans on any program I'm using during this problem), but since I'd done at least one earlier today, I just did a Q.S. this time)
1. The 1st file I sent MS (Microsoft), was "NFO", which I'm sure you know has all the system info on it. I already gave you guys the info you were asking for there, ie, model #, etc... or did I leave something out?
2. 2nd file was about Security Updates, so here are the ones I could find for Bob's request. Not sure if the "Update(l?)d = # is important, so I added it too.
a. Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) UpdateId = {BB49CC19-8847-4986-AA93-5E905421E55A}.101
b. Security Update for .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64-based Systems (KB2518869). UpdateId = {5CC5D348-10B2-4EB6-B446-B0F814D5B80E}.101
c. Security Update for .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64-based Systems (KB2478662). UpdateId = {69A6D6A1-3AE5-4308-BBA0-7E29A9EBB206}.101
d. Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2552343). UpdateId = {61BFE3EC-A1DC- 4EAB-9481-0D8FD7319AE8}.100
These are the only updates I can recognize in the report & I'm sure you don't want to see all of that here! It also said 'no update' after trying these all the times that I've tried to update it with different changes that we/I've/MS has made the last week. It was saying 6 critical updates, but now it says 4 with 3 optional, and it always installs, it just won't configure and it "reverts... changes" configuring I guess... Who knows now? Surely not I, lol!If you need further info from me just let me know & I'll try to do my best to find it & figure it out, because I really do appreciate you guys helping me out! The .NET issue and item is well discussed. SAME for the KB2538242.

We have discussed both of these before so while I have some answers STOP FRETTING. The issues these fix are rarely encountered and so far no one here or out there is reporting their machine was compromised because they didn't get these patches in.

It's very late here and for now, don't fret and I'll get back to this tomorrow.

Hey Bob, it's getting late here too. I just thought I'd mention that I do use Firefox pretty much all the time. Would something that simple be why I'm not getting updates? I thought of that before & forgot to mention it. Maybe if I go to IE and try to update there? I guess I'd have to go back & tell the pc not to use Firefox for the try? Oh yeah, for Grif... I backed up my whole system today, with 12-13 DVD-R's. It said it had to reformat each one, so maybe they weren't the right kind of CD's? I hope they worked, because I used the ones a friend gave me for music, and maybe that's why they had to be reformatted. They were blank CD's though and about half were 120 min/4.7GB & the other half were 700MB's. Thank God I barely made it through the whole back up, lol!

And try to follow Bob's steps below to uninstall the NET Framework items using the tool, then visit Windows Updates again using Internet Explorer and install the ones you need.

The lady at MS said "from the previous update log you sent, I found .net 3.5.1 failed to install. At
this time, I recommend we remove the .net framework and install the latest .net
framework 4.0 to check our issue." I clicked on the link you gave above, but it's to install .NET 4, so how do I get the old NET off before I do that? The link she sent didn't do anything but cause 3 hrs of waiting for nothing to happen, while it went between 2 diferent programs and never got over %20. I put the % sign in front of the 20 because that's what it said in the box above and to the left of the address bar. This is the link she gave me, but it hasn't done a dang thing to help my problem or uninstall .NET!

Well I never got to 'choose run or anything after that, because it started acting like it was scanning in two ways! It kept switching from one screen to another and going back and forth scanning. I let it do that for over 3 hours before I finally stopped it. I couldn't see that it was doing anything progressive.
So please tell me what to do before I install .NET 4, to get rid of the old .NET program??!!

Sorry but you're talking to an obviously completely computer illiterate person. I know the basics and maybe a little more, but I know nothing about messing around with the NET stuff.

Woohoo! I did the clean up tool and got rid of 3.5, then I installed NET 4 and it took all the updates after that! I'm such a happy camper that I can't tell you how happy I am! I feel like a puppy with all 8 teets at my choice, lol! Thank you guys so much for your help and I will always come to CNET forum when I have a problem from now on! To heck with Comcast and their useless help team, all they do is say if you can go online, then our job is done!
