microphone not working

hi,
I have a new HP 2010i desktop which doesnt come with a microphone. We've tried an external mic but it doesnt seem to work. We took it back to where we bought it from and was told the sound card had been replaced when we picked it up. The mic is still not working even with a new external mouthpiece.

Since it's past the time for returns(computer)can anyone tell me how to solve this.

I would try an USB Microphone next.

I own and use the cheapo Cyber Acoustics thing at http://www.amazon.com/Cyber-Acoustics-Microphone-Technology-AC-850/dp/B00083Y0T6

I use it with Skype. Setup and use may test some user's patience.

We've already tried 2 USB microphones which is similar to the one u use

but havent had any luck

As I noted, the setup may try user's patience as you configure the mic for each app.

If the USB mic fails, my bet is that it's not the mic but the configurations.

did you check to see if the mic was muted? I believe most are by default so as to eliminate feedback from the speakers.

Plug and Play

I've noticed that this is an issue with plug and play items. I'm having trouble with webcam. It only works in certain programs like Yahoo Messenger, and doesn't show up as a device in the device manager. Do you think it could be the same issue?
